A Safe & Supportive Space for Kids

KEF KIDS is a London-based charity founded in 2006 to support children and young adults with a wide range of physical and learning disabilities. Serving more than 100 individuals, the organization provides therapy, education, and enrichment programs in a purpose-built center that opened in 2017.

As the building aged, the existing flooring system began to fail. Cracking allowed moisture and dirt to penetrate the surface, creating hygiene concerns in an environment where cleanliness and safety are critical. Replacing the flooring became a priority — not only to resolve the technical issue, but to restore confidence in the space for children, families, and staff.

Flooring Selected for Health, Comfort, and Daily Use

To address these needs, the center installed PURLINE 1500 resilient flooring throughout the facility. The material was chosen for its low-emission profile, dimensional stability, and ability to support a clean, comfortable indoor environment. Free from plasticizers and added VOCs, the flooring contributes to indoor air quality while standing up to the daily demands of a highly active space.

Durability was equally important. The center experiences heavy foot traffic both during and outside of school hours, with spaces used for movement, play, and therapy. The resilient surface supports that activity while providing comfort underfoot — an important consideration for children who may be sensitive to hard or cold surfaces.

Practical Performance with Long-Term Value

Beyond immediate safety concerns, the flooring needed to be easy to maintain over time. The installed system supports simple, chemical-free cleaning protocols and resists dirt and staining, helping staff maintain hygiene standards without adding operational burden.

Because the building includes underfloor heating, installation details were carefully considered. A tongue-and-groove chipboard layer was installed over the heating system, with the flooring laid above it to protect the system while maintaining efficient heat transfer.

The result is a solution that supports long-term use, reduces maintenance demands, and contributes to lower lifecycle costs — an important factor for nonprofit organizations managing limited resources.

Design that Supports Sensory Experience

Color and pattern played a meaningful role in the design. The combination of Navi Blue Stars and Light Grey creates a calm, approachable backdrop while adding visual interest throughout the large facility. A checkerboard layout helps define zones and adds a sense of rhythm to the space without overwhelming it.

The center includes a range of environments — from active play areas to quiet rooms designed for rest and regulation. In the sensory room, visual projections and lighting effects interact with the floor surface, extending the experience beyond walls and ceilings and into the full spatial environment.

Built for Care-Focused Spaces

In spaces dedicated to wellbeing, materials must quietly do their job — supporting safety, comfort, and longevity without distraction. At the KEF Centre, the updated flooring provides a reliable foundation for care, learning, and play, helping the organization continue its work in a space designed around the needs of the people it serves.
